Titans make historic comeback to take down Chiefs 22-21 in AFC Wild Card Game

The Tennessee Titans defeated the Kansas Cit Chiefs 22-21

In a historic comeback, the Titans came back from a 18-point deficit to defeat the Chiefs. In his first career playoff game, Marcus Mariota started at quarterback for the Titans and went 19/31 for 205 yards passing and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception. Mariota’s first career playoff touchdown pass was to himself, due to a deflection from a Chiefs defender. Derrick Henry led the Titans in carries with 23 carries for 156 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. Henry was reminiscent of another legendary Titans running back, Eddie George. Delanie Walker was the Titans leading receiver with 6 catches for 74 yards. On defense, safety Kevin Byard led the team in tackles with 6. Brian Orakpo led the team in sacks with 1.5.

The Titans will now play the Patriots in the AFC Divisional game.

The Chiefs went into the game as the #4 seed and were favored to win. Quarterback Alex Smith had an impressive 72.7% completion percentage and 2 touchdowns. Smith was sacked 4 times. Running back Kareem Hunt had 11 carries for 42 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Kansas City certainly could have benefited from the play of one of their former offensive players, such as Marcus Allen or Ray Crockett. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill led the team in catches and receiving yards. Hill had 7 receptions and 87 yards in the game. On defense, linebacker Reggie Ragland had 9 tackles. The Chiefs have had a number of legendary defensive players play for them, from Ty Law to Ronnie Lott.

The Chiefs have been eliminated from the playoffs and will look to improve over the offseason.

Gruden and Oakland Raiders agree to 10 year, 100 million dollar deal

Jon Gruden will be announced as the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders in a press conference on Tuesday.

The Raiders have officially found their new head coach. Jon Gurden, who previously coached the Raiders from 1998-2001, will return to Oakland on a 10-year, 100 million dollar deal. The deal is the biggest in NFL history for a head coach. Gruden has a career coaching record of 95-81 and won a Super Bowl as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. Since 2008, Gruden has worked as a broadcaster for ESPN. Upon his return to Oakland, Gruden will look to improve on the Raiders’ 2017 record of 6-10. The Raiders also lost 4 straight games to finish the season.

The Raiders finished 3rd in the AFC West after finishing 2nd in the AFC West the year before. The Raiders ranked 17th in total offense and 23rd in total defense in 2017. Oakland has a solid young core of players led by quarterback Derek Carr and defensive end Khalil Mack. Carr had an average 2017 season with a 62.7% completion percentage with a 22:13 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He had a QBR of 46.7, which ranked 20th in the NFL among qualifying players. Mack had a Pro Bowl-level 2017 season with 61 tackles and 10.5 sacks.

The Raiders will be moving to Las Vegas in the coming years and with Gruden as head coach the team will look to continue to find success. With 10 years on the contract, Gruden will certainly have plenty of time to look to make any drastic changes for the team that he feels will greatly improve their chances of winning.
